Success story – Testimony by Mdm. Erica Siow, mother of student Chew Soon Lee
“My daughter, Chew Soon Lee was born in Feb 1997. As the months went by, we found she was delayed with her milestones. Later, she was considered as a child with Global Developmental Delay, as the cause of her sickness was not known. In July 1999, when she was two and a half years old, Soon Lee started attending PKKI Hulu Langat where she joined the EIP programme and later physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy were added.

She could hardly crawl then but with the help of exercises that were regularly continued at home, her gross motor improved slowly and steadily. She could walk unaided by the age of 6. Now she even tries to hop around. Although she still does not have speech, she can express herself by using some simple signs. She is now also attending special class in a government school.
We are satisfied with her improvements and we know that as time goes by she will develop more skills and will learn to express herself better. By accepting the fact that she is different and allowing her time and space to develop at her own pace, we know this has helped us to cope with her special needs.

It has been a journey full of hard work for us as parents with joy and even at times, sorrow thrown in, but we have overcome many obstacles and today we are very proud of Soon Lee’s achievements. We know it would not have been possible without her teachers and we want to thank all the teachers and therapists at PKKI who had supported and trained us to nurture our beloved girl.”
